My guess is we Americans wouldn’t see such a small hatchback as desirable. We seem to cherish size, interior space, and horsepower more.

I literally actually would. I had a 2014 mazda2 and loved it and after it was totaled I got a 2015 mazda3 so this seems perfect for my next car. I read a rumor that Toyota filed fuel economy figures for a hatchback Yaris iA so it seems like we may get this in some form, albeit with that godawful face. I’d still consider it though for a cheap reliable DD.

I read that Toyota filed fuel economy figures for a hatchback Yaris iA with the epa so we may get it, albeit with that awful face. I’ve seriously considered “importing” one from Puerto Rico, at least before the hurricane....

Unfortunately, that’s one sale. Most people wouldn’t buy them (hell, Nissan won’t even offer the Micra in the States), so it wouldn’t be worth the financial investment on Mazda’s end. Sorry, dude.

I know, but it’s already federalized, and it’s built in Mexico so it can’t be that expensive, why not offer it anyways for those of us who do....

Because the CUV craze took priority. That’s why we got the CX-3 instead, while Toyota got the sedan version.
It’s also why there’s not gonna be a wagon version of the Giulia, the Stelvio fills that slot.
It’s why we never got the BMW 1 Series hatchback, instead we have to settle for either the X1, X2, or the 2 Series coupe (at least there’s one good option there).
It’s why Audi relegated the A3 Sportback to the e-tron model, while all other A3s became sedans, in order to make room for the Q3.
It’s why Kia discontinued the Rio in the European market, replacing it with the Stonic.
It’s why Ford’s dropping the Fiesta from the US lineup, replacing it with the EcoSport.
It’s why Subaru dropped the Legacy wagon from the US lineup, making the Outback the sole station wagon version of it sold here.
It’s likely one of the reasons why Lexus dropped the CT from it’s lineup, with the NX hybrid filling it’s place.
And there’s other models I can see replacing sedans and hatches in the near future.
The upcoming next generation Acura RDX will probably spell the end for the ILX.
The addition of the Rogue Sport and upcoming Kicks could spell the end for either the Nissan Versa, Versa Note, or both.
Adding a 7 seater CUV to the Chrysler lineup will likely mean the end of the 300, with a smaller 5 seater likely filling the gap left by the end of the 200.
If Toyota decides to give the C-HR all wheel drive, it could spell the end for the Yaris hatchback.

Another “Honey, you left the ipad in plain view” dashboard.
Mazda could easily sell this in Canada where they’re more of a mainstream brand. I’d ask that question first. The real answer is because it would cannibalize the CX-3/5 or whatever.

If you go to Puerto Rico, you can have a Mazda 2 sedan. and that means that the sedan is federalized, which means you can bring the sedan from Puerto Rico to the USA. I don’t know anything about the hatch, though.

They’ve already done most of the investing though. I know it wouldn’t sell well but it’s already completely federalized and legal for sale in the US and they build the damn thing in Mexico. The cost would be minimal and I’m sure at least one other person besides me would buy one. Hell they could make them special order or something. I know they’re worried about canniibalizing CX3 sales but with a several thousand dollar price gap and much better fuel economy I’m sure they could move a few thousand at least.

I’m seriously thinking of test driving one, the grill is awful but maybe someday I could do a JDM swap, I think the headlights are different too though. I read that they filed EPA figures for a Yaris iA hatch so maybe we’ll get that. I would probably settle for that honestly, I’ll take the ugly Toyota grill I just don’t want a sedan.

I know people love to hate on tablet style infotainment but I don’t mind it and it’s done intentionally to keep it up higher in your view so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road as much. And I understand about the cx3 but at the same time, the hard work (making it legal here) is already done and for several thousand less and with better gas mileage I think it would sell at least a little. I would honestly buy one but I don’t think i would consider a cx3 instead if I can’t have the 2. I’d honestly buy the iA over the cx3 and judging by sales numbers the majority feel that way although I realize brand perception is a huge part of that.

I don’t think PR has the sedan, they do have the hatch though I’ve looked. We get the sedan already as the Toyota Yaris iA it just has the ugly catfish face, but I’m still considering it. The hatch is legal though too but seems way more expensive in PR, like 20k expensive, plus importation. I read that Toyota filed EPA figures for a Yaris iA hatch this year so maybe we’ll get that and I can do a JDM(yo) bumper swap down the line.

I think it’s beautiful, I had a 2014 mazda2 and a 2015 mazda3 and think this would be perfect. I kinda want to ditch my NC for a better DD and then get a beat or something for fun and this would be it hands down. The proportions just look so much better to me, the 3 is too long. It sounds like we might get a Yaris iA hatch so I might just have to get that and look for a jdm bumper swap, maybe the cx3 one would fit or something.

Not tomorrow no, unfortunately my credit took a big hit with some medical issues that kept my wife from working for a while, fell behind on a lot of credit cards and stuff. But I will be replacing my aging NC before next winter so definitely in the next year, just need more of a down payment I think to help with the credit.

My guess is cost to make and ship them, which still costs, even from Mexico. Then you have to get the dealers to stock them, and if market research says they won’t move, no one wants them depreciating on the lots until they have to slash them like Darts to move them.
Now if we could just make them available for factory order, but that’s not the way the American market generally does things.

Or be like most other countries and allow grey-imports where if it’s not a readily available car to the country it gets inspected and gets signed off as one off or simply added to the database.

I do intend to call mazda corporate and see if I can get one before i buy a yaris is, shipping shouldn’t be an issue because the same factory already makes the iA and some Mazda3's for the US. I understand all the logic and I’m certainly not gonna get my hopes up about being able to special order one, it just seems like a perfect DD and I want one and it’s frustrating because there’s no reason they CAN’T do it they just WON’T. This is MURICA and they’re taking my FREEDOM to own a (small obscure unpopular) car!

I am going to call mazda corporate and see if I can get one special order before I buy the ugly toyota version, it’s not an importation issue as the car is completely legal already, they just don’t see a case for selling them here. But it’s sold in Puerto Rico so it’s legal federally and they’re made in the same factory they make the yaris iA and mazda 3 so they would just have to squeeze a mazda2 on one of those trains for me.
Khalbali

Except way worse gas mileage and more expensive. I’m gonna ask if I can special order a mazda2 since they’re federally legal, and when they say no I’ll probably buy a Yaris iA. Hopefully it will replace the normal Yaris hatchback soon so I can at least get an ugly mugged hatch instead of an ugly mugged sedan.

The only hurdle I can think of with that is rear crash ratings for NHTSA, since the rear of a 2 hatch is “significantly different” than a CX-3 and iA.

No it’s all legal, they sell the 2 hatch in Puerto Rico so it meets all federal emissions and safety requirements.
